Megalonotus chiragra

Systematic position. Megalonotus chiragra belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhyparochromidae. Known as a seed bug, it is a common insect in various terrestrial habitats across the Palaearctic region, often interacting with agricultural environments where it can transition from a wild dweller to a localized pest.

Crops damaged. This insect is known for its polyphagous behavior, affecting a range of plant species. Primary crops at risk include cereals like wheat, barley, and rye. It also exploits various wild grasses and weeds, which often act as reservoirs for the pest population before they migrate into managed fields.

Biology and life cycle. Megalonotus chiragra overwinters as an adult, seeking refuge under dense plant debris, leaf litter, or within the upper layers of the soil. As temperatures rise in the spring, the insects become active, feed on early sprouts or germinating seeds, and begin mating. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, with nymphs developing in close proximity to the food sources used by the adults.

Damage and economic significance. The damage is primarily caused by both nymphs and adults piercing and sucking fluids from developing seeds and tender seedlings. This feeding activity reduces the vigor of the plant, often leading to reduced germination rates and weakened stands. In cases of significant infestation, economic damage can occur through noticeable thinning of the crop density.

Protection measures. Effective management depends on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Key practices include deep autumn plowing to bury overwintering adults, maintaining clean field margins by removing weed hosts, and ensuring optimal seeding density to minimize the impact of early-stage feeding. Chemical control using registered insecticides may be considered only if monitoring confirms that pest populations have exceeded established economic thresholds.
