Megaplatypus is a genus of wood-boring beetles belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. Unlike typical bark beetles that feed primarily beneath the bark, these beetles are capable of boring deep into the xylem of both stressed and healthy trees, creating extensive gallery systems that can severely compromise the structural integrity of the wood.

These pests primarily target various woody plant species, including commercially important timber crops and ornamental trees. While they are often attracted to trees weakened by drought, fire, or physical damage, established populations can successfully attack apparently healthy trees, leading to widespread economic loss in forest plantations.

The biology of Megaplatypus is uniquely tied to symbiotic fungi. Females bore into the heartwood and introduce specific fungi into their tunnels, which then serve as the exclusive food source for the developing larvae. The life cycle encompasses egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, all occurring within the protective environment of the gallery, making them highly resistant to standard topical insecticide applications.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by numerous entry holes on the tree surface accompanied by piles of boring dust. Inside the tree, the complex web of tunnels disrupts the vascular system, preventing the flow of water and nutrients. This damage leads to crown dieback, reduced timber quality, and often provides entry points for opportunistic fungal pathogens that accelerate the tree's decline.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive silviculture rather than chemical control. Key measures include the regular monitoring of plantations and the prompt removal and destruction of infested trees to eliminate brood sources. Maintaining forest vigor through proper density management and thinning helps reduce susceptibility to infestation, effectively limiting the establishment of new beetle colonies.
