It is a specialized pest that primarily targets the bark of various woody perennial plants, making it a significant concern for both fruit orchards and ornamental nursery stock.
This insect is characterized by its ability to colonize the trunks and scaffold branches of host trees. The scale cover produced by the insect is highly adaptive, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the bark texture of the host, which often delays early detection and allows the population to establish deep infestations.
The life cycle of Melanaspis corticosa involves distinct developmental stages, starting from eggs protected under the female's shield. Upon hatching, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge to find suitable feeding sites. Once a crawler settles and begins to feed, it secretes a protective waxy covering, transitioning into a stationary life stage.
