The sugarcane scale (Melanaspis glomerata) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This scale insect is a serious pest that primarily attacks the stems of sugarcane, often thriving in the humid microclimate beneath the leaf sheaths, making detection difficult during early infestation stages.

The primary host for this species is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). While it is highly host-specific, the economic impact on sugarcane production is profound, as the scale insects multiply rapidly under favorable environmental conditions, potentially causing severe damage to entire plantations.

The biology of Melanaspis glomerata involves distinct developmental stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. The crawler stage is critical for dispersal, as these tiny nymphs move actively across the plant surface to find suitable feeding sites. Once they settle and begin feeding, they secrete a hard, protective waxy cover that makes them highly resistant to contact pesticides.

Damage occurs through continuous sap-sucking, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and moisture. Key symptoms include stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and the death of individual stalks. Beyond physical damage, the reduction in sucrose content significantly diminishes the commercial value of the crop, causing heavy losses for farmers.
