Inopinata scale

Systematic position: The inopinata scale (Melanaspis inopinata) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized armored scale species that poses a significant threat to orchards, particularly in arid and semi-arid climates.

Host plants: This pest primarily infests stone and pome fruit trees. Common hosts include almond, peach, plum, apricot, and apple trees. It also occasionally colonizes various ornamental shrubs, causing severe stress to the woody parts of the plants.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically overwinters as a first or second-instar nymph beneath a protective shield on the bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the nymphs resume feeding and mature. Depending on the geographical region and climate, the species may complete one or two generations per year.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The scale insects insert their mouthparts into the bark to extract plant sap. Sustained feeding leads to cortical tissue necrosis, bark cracking, and loss of vigor. In cases of heavy infestation, the affected trees show stunted growth, branch dieback, and significant reduction in fruit quality and yield.
