Melanaspis tenax scale
Melanaspis tenax
Description
Melanaspis tenax is a dangerous species of insect belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects) within the order Hemiptera. This pest specializes in attacking woody plants and shrubs, causing significant weakening of the host plant's vital functions by continuously sucking sap from the tissues of the bark, leaves, and shoots.
The primary host range includes various ornamental trees and shrubs, as well as several species of fruit-bearing crops. The pest prefers to settle on branches and trunks, forming dense colonies that, if left unattended, can lead to the necrosis of individual plant parts or the death of the entire host plant.
The biology of this species is characterized by the presence of a protective scale or "shield," which serves as a robust shelter for the female and her eggs. The life cycle consists of the egg, crawler (first-instar nymph), and adult stages. During the crawler phase, the insect is most vulnerable and actively disperses throughout the plant or is carried by the wind to neighboring sites, facilitating rapid population expansion.
Damage symptoms manifest as yellowing, deformation, and premature leaf drop. During heavy infestations, the bark may crack, and young shoots often die back, significantly stunting the overall growth of the plant. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew by the pests frequently leads to the growth of sooty mold, which covers the plant surface with a dark, unsightly coating.
Effective protection of plantings requires a combination of agrotechnical and chemical strategies. It is essential to perform regular inspections, execute sanitary pruning of infested branches, and apply systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period. Maintaining plant vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization is also critical to mitigating the impact of this pest.
