Gloomy scale

The gloomy scale (Melanaspis tenebricosa) is a serious pest affecting various woody plants, belonging to the Diaspididae family in the order Hemiptera. This insect is widely recognized for its ability to infest tree bark, creating large, dark-colored colonies that often go unnoticed until the plant shows visible signs of decline.

This species primarily attacks a range of deciduous trees. Maples, especially red and silver maples, are the most frequent hosts. However, it also affects elms, hackberries, poplars, and some species of willow. The pest prefers to settle on trunks and large limbs, where it can cause severe damage to the vascular tissue of the tree.

The life cycle of the gloomy scale consists of a single generation per year. Adult females overwinter protected by their hard, gray to black waxy armor. In late spring or early summer, they produce mobile crawlers. These tiny, immature scales move to new sites on the host plant, where they settle, insert their mouthparts, and begin feeding, eventually secreting their own protective covers.

The primary damage caused by the gloomy scale is the extraction of nutrients through phloem sap feeding. As the population density increases, the bark becomes covered with rough, bumpy patches. Infested trees typically exhibit branch dieback, thinning canopy, and stunted growth. If left untreated, severe infestations can significantly weaken or eventually kill host trees.

Management of the gloomy scale requires an integrated approach to be effective. Recommended control strategies include:

• Monitoring for crawler emergence in early summer to time insecticide applications accurately.
• Applying systemic insecticides as soil drenches or trunk injections.
• Using horticultural oils during the dormant season to smother overwintering females.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering to help the host withstand stress.
