Description
The squash vine borer (genus Melittia) is a significant pest belonging to the Sesiidae family of moths. These insects are notorious for their clear-wing appearance, which mimics stinging wasps and hornets. The most destructive species is Melittia cucurbitae, which poses a severe threat to commercial and home-grown cucurbit cultivation.
This pest exclusively targets cucurbits, including summer squash, winter squash, pumpkins, and gourds. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they tunnel into the base of the stems. By feeding on the internal tissues, they disrupt the vascular bundles, preventing the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant.
Understanding the biology of the borer is key to control. Adults emerge in late spring or summer and lay individual eggs on the stems of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae quickly bore into the stem, where they feed and develop for about a month. Once mature, they exit the stems and drop into the soil to pupate in a silk-lined cocoon for the winter.
The most common symptom of an infestation is the sudden wilting of leaves during the hottest part of the day, even if soil moisture is adequate. Gardeners should inspect the base of the plants for small entry holes and the presence of frass, which looks like coarse, wet sawdust. Often, the stem near the crown will appear swollen or rotted.
Effective management strategies combine cultural and chemical practices.

- Using row covers early in the season to prevent egg-laying.
