Squash vine borer

Systematic position: The squash vine borer (Melittia cucurbitae) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are day-flying moths that closely mimic the appearance of wasps or hornets, a deceptive display that often makes them go unnoticed by gardeners until significant plant damage has already occurred.

Crops attacked: This pest is highly specific to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a major threat to summer and winter squash, pumpkins, and zucchini. While they have a strong preference for Cucurbita pepo varieties, they can also attack gourds, cucumbers, and melons if their preferred hosts are unavailable or if infestation levels are high.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year, although two generations can occur in warmer climates. Adults emerge in early summer and deposit eggs on the stems of host plants. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the vine. They feed internally for 4 to 6 weeks, then leave the plant to pupate in the soil, where they overwinter as larvae or pupae within a cocoon.

Nature of damage and harm: The larvae are the destructive stage of this pest. By tunneling through the interior of the vine, they disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing water and nutrient uptake. The first visible symptom is often sudden wilting of the plant or individual vines on sunny days, followed by the presence of moist, sawdust-like frass pushing out from holes in the stem.

Control measures: Managing the squash vine borer requires a multi-faceted approach to prevent catastrophic loss:

• Monitor plants closely starting in late spring for signs of entry holes and frass.
• Cover stems with soil to encourage the development of adventitious roots, which can sustain the plant if the base is damaged.
• Use row covers to prevent egg-laying moths from reaching the stems, removing them once pollination is needed.
• Physically remove larvae by making a longitudinal incision in the stem and killing the borer.
• Destroy heavily infested vines immediately to reduce the population for the following season.
