These insects are recognized for their mimicry, as adults resemble wasps, which serves as a defense mechanism against predators. They are specialized borers that spend most of their larval stage hidden inside plant tissues.

Host crops: This pest primarily targets plants in the Cucurbitaceae family. Common targets include squash, pumpkins, zucchini, melons, and cucumbers. Because they infest the main stem of these plants, a single infestation can rapidly compromise the health of the entire plant, leading to significant yield losses in both commercial and home gardens.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Melittia eurytion involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the stems of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the stem, where they feed on the pith. The pupation process usually occurs in the soil, where the insect overwinters in a protective cocoon until the following season.

Damage and pest impact: The larvae cause structural damage by feeding within the stems, disrupting the plant's vascular system. Symptoms include sudden wilting of the vines, presence of frass (larval excrement) at the base of the stems, and visible entry holes. Once the stems are weakened, the plant can no longer support fruit development, and total plant death is common.
