Coconut stem borer

The coconut stem borer (Melittomma insulare) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Lymexylidae. This specialized wood-boring beetle is considered one of the most destructive pests affecting coconut plantations, particularly in the islands of the Indian Ocean and the Seychelles region.

The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The beetle targets the trunk of the palm, boring into the inner tissues, which can lead to severe physiological stress and a significant decline in the growth and fruit-bearing capacity of the tree.

The life cycle of Melittomma insulare is closely tied to the palm's trunk. Females deposit eggs into crevices or existing wounds on the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, creating extensive galleries. The entire development process, including pupation, occurs within the trunk before the adult beetle emerges to restart the cycle.

The damage caused by the larvae is twofold: they physically destroy the vascular tissue of the trunk and create entry points for secondary infections like fungi and bacteria. Symptoms of an infestation include "frass" (sawdust-like material) accumulating at the base of the tree and a visible decline in foliage color, leading to reduced yield and potential tree death.

• Monitor plantations regularly for early signs of boreholes.
• Ensure proper tree hygiene and avoid physical bark injuries.
• Remove and destroy heavily infested palm trees.
• Apply specialized insecticides via trunk injection if recommended by local authorities.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and targeted interventions. Keeping plantations well-maintained reduces the beetle's ability to find suitable hosts. In severe cases, professional intervention is necessary to prevent the total loss of valuable coconut palms in the infested area.
