Systematic position: The chestnut timberworm (Melittomma sericeum) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Lymexylidae (timberworms). These beetles are known for their wood-boring larvae that inhabit the trunks of trees, often causing significant technical damage to the timber quality of affected species.

Affected plants: This pest primarily targets deciduous hardwood trees. It is particularly known for infesting chestnut and oak trees. While it frequently selects weakened or stressed trees, populations can build up significantly and begin attacking relatively healthy timber, leading to widespread decline in local forest health.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is inextricably linked to the woody host. Adult females lay eggs in bark crevices or existing wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the xylem of the tree. They are known for "farming" specific fungi within their tunnels, which serves as a primary food source, while their mechanical boring creates extensive damage throughout the inner heartwood.

Damage patterns: The primary damage is caused by the larvae as they construct intricate tunnel systems within the trunk. This boring activity disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to tree decline, branch dieback, and eventually tree mortality. Visible signs of infestation include piles of "frass" or fine sawdust pushed out from entry holes in the bark.

Protection measures: Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach:
