Description
The dock bug, scientifically identified as Mesocerus marginatus, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. It is a common insect pest characterized by its distinct brownish, flattened body, which allows it to blend into the environment on various plants.
This pest is primarily associated with plants of the Polygonaceae family. Its preferred hosts include dock species (Rumex), sorrel, buckwheat, and rhubarb. While it is often considered a minor pest, high populations can cause significant cosmetic and physiological damage to commercial crops and garden vegetables.
The life cycle of the dock bug consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as adults, finding shelter in leaf litter, debris, or shallow soil layers. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, mate, and begin laying eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. Nymphs pass through several developmental stages before becoming winged adults.
The damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues with their specialized mouthparts to suck sap. This feeding behavior causes chlorotic spots, leaf wilting, and overall stunted growth. In severe cases, the vitality of the plant is significantly reduced, which directly impacts the yield of leafy greens and similar crops.

- Practicing thorough soil cultivation in autumn to disrupt hibernation sites.
- Monitoring fields during the early growing season.
