Dock bug

Systematic position: The dock bug (Mesocerus marginatus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. These insects are well-known to agronomists as common garden and field pests that inhabit various wild and cultivated plants, often causing direct damage to foliage through their feeding habits.

Host plants: The dock bug is a polyphagous insect but shows a distinct preference for plants within the Polygonaceae family. It is most frequently found feeding on sorrel, rhubarb, and buckwheat. In addition to these, it may also infest various legumes and weeds, which often serve as host reservoirs during the early stages of the season.

Biology and life cycle: Adults of the species overwinter in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter, debris, or under the bark of trees. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females lay clusters of eggs, typically on the underside of leaves. The nymphs that hatch undergo several molts before reaching the adult stage, typically completing one generation annually in temperate climates.

Damage and economic impact: Both nymphs and adults are sap-suckers. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, they extract essential plant juices from the leaves and stems. This feeding process results in pale, chlorotic spotting, leaf deformation, and stunted growth. In commercial production, high infestations can render crops unmarketable due to the aesthetic damage and general loss of plant vigor.

Control measures: Managing the dock bug requires a combination of cultural and preventive strategies to minimize crop loss:

• Weed control: Eliminating host plants like wild dock and sorrel around field edges.
• Soil cultivation: Tilling the soil in late autumn to disrupt overwintering sites for the adults.
• Manual removal: For small-scale gardens, hand-picking bugs is often effective.
• Chemical control: If necessary, applying systemic or contact insecticides approved for the specific crop, strictly adhering to pre-harvest intervals.
