Metaceronema is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. These pests are known for their sap-sucking habits, which can lead to severe physiological stress in a wide variety of ornamental and woody plant species, significantly impacting their growth and vitality.

The host range of Metaceronema includes various shrubs and trees, with a particular affinity for plants grown in sheltered or indoor environments such as greenhouses and conservatories. Because these environments lack natural predators, the population of scale insects can increase rapidly, leading to heavy infestations on stems and leaf undersides.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal stages (often including mobile "crawlers"), and the adult stage. The adult females are typically sessile, protected by a waxy test that makes them highly resistant to contact insecticides. Understanding the timing of the crawler emergence is crucial for successful pest management.

Damage is caused both by direct feeding, which drains the plant's resources, and by the excretion of honeydew. This sticky substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves, further weakening the plant and ruining its aesthetic and economic value.
