Broad-winged katydid

Systematic position and description: The broad-winged katydid (Microcentrum rhombifolium) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. Its common name is derived from its broad, leaf-shaped forewings, which perfectly mimic the texture and venation of a tree leaf, providing the insect with excellent camouflage against predators in its natural habitat.

Crops damaged: This pest is a generalist feeder that impacts a wide range of woody and shrubby plants. It causes significant damage to citrus trees (oranges, lemons, grapefruit), various fruit trees like apples and peaches, and ornamental shrubs, including roses and lilacs, by consuming tender leaves and fresh shoots.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, five nymphal stages, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in rows along the margins of leaves or on thin stems, often arranging them in a distinct overlapping or staggered pattern. In most climates, there is only one generation per year, and the insect overwinter in the egg stage, attached firmly to the host plant.

Damage character and economic importance: The primary damage is caused by adults and late-stage nymphs that feed on foliage, resulting in characteristic semi-circular notches or completely skeletonized leaves. Beyond leaf consumption, the female's egg-laying process can cause physical damage to young twigs, potentially leading to necrosis or creating entry points for secondary pathogens.

Protection measures: Management requires an integrated pest management approach.
