Microlarinus lypriformis is a specialized species of weevil belonging to the Curculionidae family, primarily known for its role as a biological control agent against the invasive weed Tribulus terrestris, commonly known as puncturevine. Native to regions where this weed is prevalent, it has been introduced to various parts of the world to mitigate the damage caused by this troublesome plant to agriculture and livestock.

Taxonomically, the insect is classified within the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. It is a distinct species often used in tandem with Microlarinus lareynii, a seed-feeding weevil. While Lareynii focuses on the fruits and seeds, Lypriformis is characterized by its preference for the stems and crown of the puncturevine, providing a comprehensive strategy for plant destruction.

The life cycle of Microlarinus lypriformis is intimately tied to the phenology of the host plant. Adults emerge from overwintering sites in the soil during the spring, feeding on the leaves before mating. Females then bore holes into the stems to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the plant tissue, creating internal cavities that eventually lead to the plant's collapse and death.
