Kadoyama bark beetle

Microperus kadoyamaensis is a specific species of bark beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is recognized as a significant pest, primarily affecting woody vegetation and posing a threat to the health and stability of forest ecosystems and urban landscaping.

The beetle targets a range of host trees, particularly those that are already under physiological stress due to drought, disease, or mechanical damage. By excavating galleries beneath the bark, the insect disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, which eventually leads to canopy dieback and can eventually result in the death of the entire host tree.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles bore through the bark to construct egg galleries. The larvae then hatch and tunnel into the phloem and cambium layers, creating intricate patterns of feeding galleries that further weaken the tree's structural integrity and vascular system.

The damage caused by this pest is often signaled by the appearance of small entry holes and fine sawdust, known as frass, on the tree trunk. The destructive activity of the beetle often creates an entry point for secondary pathogens, such as fungi, which accelerate the decline and death of the infested trees compared to those not affected.
