Description
Milviscutulus is a genus of insects from the order Hemiptera, belonging to the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scales. These pests are specialized phytophages that lead a hidden lifestyle, attaching themselves to the vegetative parts of plants. In agronomic practice, they are classified as dangerous sap-sucking pests capable of significantly suppressing the growth of perennial plantings during mass outbreaks.
The main range of infestation covers a wide spectrum of ornamental and fruit crops, including species from the Rubiaceae and Solanaceae families. Colonies of the pest are most frequently discovered on tropical and subtropical plants grown in greenhouses as well as in outdoor gardens in warmer regions. The pest prefers to colonize the undersides of leaf blades and young shoots, which complicates its early detection.
The biology of this species is closely linked to temperature conditions. Females are immobile and protected by a dense chitinous shield, which serves as a reliable barrier against many environmental factors. The development cycle includes egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, such as high humidity and stable warmth, the insect can produce several generations per year, leading to exponential population growth.
The harm caused by this pest manifests in the systematic extraction of plant sap from the tissues. During feeding, the insect injects enzymes into the plant tissues, causing chlorosis and deformation of leaves. Additionally, the metabolic activity of Milviscutulus promotes the growth of sooty mold on the honeydew they secrete, which hinders photosynthesis and leads to premature leaf drop and a general weakening of the plant's immune system.
To ensure effective plant protection, a comprehensive approach is recommended:
