The mango shield scale (Milviscutulus mangiferae) is a significant pest belonging to the family Coccidae, within the order Hemiptera. The species primarily attacks mango, citrus, avocado, and various ornamental plants. It is most frequently found on the undersides of leaves, particularly near the leaf veins, and on young, tender stems where the sap is easily accessible, providing optimal conditions for the insect's development.
The biology of Milviscutulus mangiferae involves a sedentary phase for the female, which is protected by a flattened, scale-like covering. They often reproduce parthenogenetically, which contributes to rapid population growth.
