Description
Milviscutulus pilosus, commonly referred to as the hairy scale, is a significant sucking pest belonging to the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is primarily recognized as a pest of indoor plants, ornamental species, and greenhouse crops, often causing severe damage if left unmanaged due to its cryptic behavior.
The host range for this pest is diverse, affecting various ornamental plants, citrus varieties, magnolias, and other woody evergreens. The insects prefer to aggregate on the underside of leaves, particularly along the midribs and veins, as well as on succulent stems where they insert their stylets to extract phloem sap.
The biological development of this species comprises several stages, including eggs, mobile crawlers, nymphs, and sessile adults. Adult females are protected by a convex, stationary scale structure that blends in with the plant surface. High reproductive potential allows for multiple generations annually under favorable greenhouse conditions, leading to rapid population growth.
The damage caused by the hairy scale includes yellowing (chlorosis) of foliage, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, these insects excrete large amounts of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This black fungal layer interferes with photosynthesis and significantly reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of ornamental plants.
