Systematic position: The Chinese leaf beetle (Mimela chinensis) is classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is a well-known agricultural pest in East Asia, recognized for its significant impact on various plant species due to both subterranean and aerial feeding habits.

Host plants and damage: The pest affects a broad range of crops, including cereals, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Adult beetles predominantly target the foliage and flowers, causing severe defoliation. Simultaneously, the subterranean larvae feed on the roots, which stunts plant growth and reduces the overall vigor of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is heavily dependent on soil conditions and temperature. Eggs are deposited in the soil, where larvae develop by consuming roots, eventually pupating in the substrate before emerging as adults during the warm season.
