Pod-sucking bug

Mirperus scutellaris is a species of hemipteran insect belonging to the Alydidae family. Known as a pod-sucking bug, this pest presents a significant agricultural threat in various tropical and subtropical regions. It specializes in targeting leguminous crops, often causing economic losses by directly affecting the yield and quality of seeds.

The host range of this insect primarily includes important legumes such as cowpea, soybean, and various species of beans. Because the pest focuses its feeding activity on reproductive structures, the impact is most severe during the critical stages of pod filling and grain development, leading to potential yield reductions in commercial fields.

The biology of Mirperus scutellaris involves a typical hemimetabolous development cycle. Females deposit eggs on host plants, and the emerging nymphs pass through several instars. Interestingly, the nymphs often mimic ants in appearance, which is a behavioral and morphological adaptation frequently observed in members of the Alydidae family to deter potential predators.

Damage is caused when both adults and nymphs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate pods and feed on developing seeds.
