Description
Monarthrum is a genus of small beetles belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae family. These insects are specialized wood-borers commonly found in North and South America, where they colonize various tree species by tunneling into the xylem.
These pests primarily infest a wide range of deciduous and coniferous trees. Monarthrum beetles pose the greatest threat to stressed, weakened, or fallen trees, though high populations can occasionally attack healthy trees, leading to secondary infections and rapid decline of the forest stand.
The biology of Monarthrum is defined by a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. Females bore deep tunnels into the wood where they deposit eggs.
