Description
Systematic position: Mononychus is a genus of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera. These beetles are highly specialized pests often found in habitats near water, where their primary host plants naturally thrive.
Host plants: The primary target of Mononychus is the genus Iris. While they are commonly associated with wild iris species found in wetland areas, they frequently infest cultivated irises in garden settings, targeting the developing seed capsules and causing significant damage to reproductive structures.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the Mononychus weevil is closely tied to the flowering period of irises. Adults emerge in spring to feed on leaves and flower buds. After mating, females deposit their eggs inside the developing ovary. The larvae hatch and remain inside the seed capsule, feeding on the developing seeds until they are ready to pupate.
Damage and economic significance: The damage is primarily caused by the larvae consuming the seeds within the fruit capsule. Infested capsules may become deformed, discolor prematurely, or fail to produce viable seeds. Because the larvae are endophagous (living inside the plant tissue), they are protected from environmental stresses, making them challenging to control once established.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Mononychus. Cultural practices, such as manually removing and destroying infested seed pods before larvae emerge, are highly effective. For chemical control, systemic insecticides applied during the early adult emergence phase, before egg-laying begins, provide the best results in reducing overall population density.
