Description

The Iris weevil (Mononychus punctumalbum) is a beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family. It is a highly specialized pest primarily associated with the Iris genus, particularly the yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus). The species is easily recognizable by the distinct white spot on its elytra, which serves as its primary diagnostic feature.

This insect primarily attacks the reproductive organs of the host plant. Adult beetles feed on the leaves and developing buds, causing minor aesthetic damage. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage, as they tunnel into the ovary of the flower to feed on the developing seeds, effectively destroying them before maturity.

The life cycle of the Iris weevil is synchronized with the blooming period of its host. The adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to the iris plants to feed and mate. Eggs are laid inside the developing seed pods, where the larvae hatch and grow, consuming the interior until they pupate within the shell.

The damage caused by this pest is significant in seed production. Infested pods often show signs of stunted growth, distortion, and premature browning. Because the larva remains inside the pod until it completes its development, the seeds are often reduced to frass and debris, making them completely non-viable.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling the Iris weevil. Cultural practices include the early removal and destruction of infested seed pods before the larvae emerge. Chemical control involving systemic insecticides may be applied during the early bud development stage to target adults. Furthermore, autumn soil cultivation helps disrupt the overwintering population of the beetles.
