Iris weevil

The iris weevil (Mononychus vulpeculus) is a specialized pest belonging to the Curculionidae family of beetles. It is widely recognized as a significant nuisance for those who cultivate irises, as it specifically targets the reproductive parts of the plant during its growth cycle.

The primary hosts for this insect are various species within the Iris genus. It poses a particular threat to decorative garden varieties and seed production fields, as the weevil's feeding activities can destroy the plant's ability to propagate sexually, leading to significant loss of potential seeds.

The lifecycle of the iris weevil is perfectly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Adults emerge in spring to feed on young buds, causing small puncture wounds. The females then oviposit directly into the ovary. The resulting larvae consume the developing seeds from within, rendering the seed pods hollow and non-viable.

The damage caused by this pest is often subtle at first, appearing as small perforations on the buds, but it quickly leads to the abortion of the flowers or the shriveling of seed pods. Growers may notice the premature yellowing of the pods and the presence of frass as signs that the infestation is already severe.
