Muntiacus

Muntiacus, commonly known as the muntjac deer, belongs to the family Cervidae within the order Artiodactyla. While often viewed as wildlife, they are classified as significant agricultural and forestry pests in areas where their population has expanded, causing substantial losses to farmers, nursery managers, and garden owners.

Their feeding behavior is highly destructive to cultivated landscapes. Muntjacs are browsers that target tender shoots, buds, leaves, and the bark of trees. They pose a critical threat to ornamental shrubs, fruit tree saplings, and young forest plantations, often stripping the bark which causes severe stress or death to the host plants.

The biology of Muntiacus is notable for its lack of a strictly seasonal breeding cycle. Unlike many other deer species, they can breed throughout the year, with females capable of producing offspring frequently. This rapid turnover of generations allows local populations to quickly overwhelm agricultural environments if left unchecked.

The damage caused by these animals is often irreversible for young saplings. Beyond the direct consumption of foliage, they cause structural damage to trunks through browsing and fraying, which introduces pathogens to the tree tissues. They are also known to graze on cereal crops and forage in vegetable patches, leading to reduced yields and loss of plant health.

Management strategies focus on physical exclusion and behavioral modification. The most effective defense is the installation of high-tensile mesh fencing specifically designed to exclude small deer species. Additionally, the following methods are widely used to reduce impact:

• Application of chemical repellents to tree stems.
• Use of acoustic and motion-activated repelling devices.
• Regular monitoring of vegetation to identify early signs of browsing.
