Myllocerus lineatocollis weevil

Systematic position. Myllocerus lineatocollis is a species of weevil belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These beetles are characterized by their specialized feeding habits and are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural ecosystems, particularly in tropical regions where they can rapidly increase their population density.

Affected crops. This species is known for its polyphagous behavior. It causes economic damage to a wide range of plants, including leguminous crops such as soybeans and peas, various vegetables like eggplants and okra, as well as several woody perennial plants. Seedlings and young plants are the most susceptible to significant damage during the early growth stages.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in the soil or in crevices of plant tissues. Larvae develop in the rhizosphere, feeding on roots, while the adults are foliar feeders, causing damage to the leaves throughout the warmer months of the growing season.

Nature of damage. The primary symptom of an infestation is the irregular notching of leaf margins, often referred to as 'leaf-edge feeding'. In severe cases, extensive defoliation occurs, which compromises the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Additionally, larval feeding on roots impairs water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted plant growth and overall decline in vigor.

Protection measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on both soil and plant health. Key strategies include:
