Description
The Myndus genus belongs to the family Cixiidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized phytophages that often remain unnoticed due to their small size and ability to move quickly within dense vegetation. They play a significant role in entomofauna as potential vectors of phytoplasmas and viral plant diseases.
This pest affects a wide range of crops, including fruit trees, vineyards, and various ornamental plants. The most notorious species is Myndus crudus, which is widely recognized as a vector of lethal yellowing disease in palms in tropical regions. In temperate climates, members of this family often cause damage to vegetable and industrial crops by feeding on the sap of young shoots and leaves.
The biology of Myndus involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs in plant tissues or in the substrate near the roots. Larvae typically develop in the soil or under layers of leaf litter, feeding on plant roots, which makes them extremely difficult to detect. Adults primarily live above ground and disperse actively across the field during the growing season.
The damage caused involves a general decline in the plant's health. As a result of sap extraction, leaves lose turgor, curl, and become chlorotic. However, the greatest harm lies in the toxicogenic effect of the insect's saliva and the transmission of systemic pathogens. Plants affected by these transmitted diseases often stop fruiting and may die within a few seasons.
Control measures require an integrated approach, as chemical treatments against adults are often insufficient. It is recommended to:
- Perform regular population monitoring using yellow sticky traps.
- Remove weeds that may serve as reservoirs for infection and shelters for larvae.
- Apply systemic insecticides during periods of mass adult emergence.
- Implement strict quarantine measures when importing planting material from regions affected by phytoplasmas.
