Description
The common antlion (Myrmeleon formicarius) belongs to the Neuroptera order and the Myrmeleontidae family. It is essential to clarify that this insect is not an agricultural pest. In fact, it is classified as a beneficial entomophage, acting as a natural predator that helps control the population of various insects in agricultural environments.
The biological cycle of the antlion consists of a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is particularly well-known for creating conical pits in dry, loose soil or sand. Once a small insect or spider falls into this pit, the larva seizes its prey with robust sickle-shaped mandibles, feeding on its internal fluids.
