Description
The genus Nemocestes is a group of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae (true weevils) and the order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various horticultural sectors due to the dual nature of their damage, impacting both the root system and the foliar parts of plants.
These pests target a wide array of hosts, particularly soft fruit crops like strawberries and raspberries, as well as various woody ornamentals. Nemocestes species are particularly problematic in nursery environments where high-density planting provides an ideal habitat for larval development and population growth.
The biological cycle of these weevils involves the female laying eggs in the soil near the base of the host plant. The larvae, which are C-shaped and legless, emerge and feed on the roots. This stage is the most damaging, as it directly weakens the plant's structural integrity and ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil.
The resulting damage typically manifests as stunted growth, wilting during periods of low moisture, and eventually the death of the plant. This includes soil cultivation to disturb larval habitats, the use of biological control agents like entomopathogenic nematodes to target soil stages, and targeted insecticide applications.
