Neolecanium

Neolecanium is a genus of scale insects within the family Coccidae (soft scales) in the order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized plant pests that have evolved to feed exclusively on the sap of woody plants, often forming dense colonies on the bark of stems and branches.

These pests primarily infest a range of ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. Their presence is often detected by the characteristic appearance of their bodies, which are typically convex and covered in a waxy or leathery substance, making them look like natural bumps on the bark of the host plant.

The life cycle of Neolecanium involves a sedentary female stage and a mobile crawler stage. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny crawlers emerge from beneath the mother's protective shell and move across the plant surfaces to locate optimal feeding sites. After establishing themselves, they lose their mobility and begin to grow rapidly by sucking sap.

The damage caused by these insects is severe when infestations reach high levels. Plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and branch dieback due to nutrient depletion. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the plant surfaces and impairs photosynthesis, further stressing the tree.

Effective management requires a combination of chemical and cultural practices. Horticultural oils applied during the dormant season are highly effective at smothering overwintering stages. During the active growing season, applying systemic insecticides at the time of crawler emergence provides the best control results.
