Neolecanium silveirai is a significant pest belonging to the Coccidae family, commonly known as soft scales. This insect is primarily recognized for its ability to infest woody plants, causing gradual decline in vigor and health. The adult females remain stationary for most of their lives, protected by a hard, convex covering that blends into the texture of the bark.

The host range of this pest includes various ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. By inserting their mouthparts into the phloem, they siphon off plant sap, which serves as their primary nutrient source. The persistence of these insects in large numbers can lead to stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and in extreme cases, the death of branches or younger trees.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited beneath the protective female body. Once hatched, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge to find a suitable feeding site on the host. This crawler stage is the most critical time for monitoring, as the insect is not yet shielded by a heavy waxy layer, making it susceptible to chemical intervention.

Damage assessment reveals that besides sap depletion, the pest excretes large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance covers the plant surface, attracting sooty mold, which effectively blocks photosynthesis by coating the leaves. This combination of sap-sucking and secondary fungal growth severely hampers the plant's metabolic processes and overall aesthetic appeal.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on preventive and curative actions:

• Regular inspection of bark surfaces for early detection of colonies.
• Mechanical removal of infested areas during the pruning season.
• Application of targeted systemic insecticides during the crawler activity period.
• Utilizing dormant oils to smother over-wintering stages on the bark.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps, to control population levels.
