Flindersia gall mite

Neomerimnetes flindersiae is a specialized herbivorous mite belonging to the Eriophyidae family, commonly referred to as gall mites. These organisms are microscopic and exhibit complex interactions with their host plants. Due to their small size, they are often identified by the symptoms they cause rather than direct observation of the individuals.

The primary hosts for this mite are trees belonging to the genus Flindersia, such as the widely known Flindersia australis. The mite specifically targets young vegetative tissues, where it establishes colonies. The environmental preferences of this mite are strictly tied to the distribution and physiological state of the host tree species.

The biological cycle of this mite is characterized by an intimate relationship with the plant host. Upon settling on the leaf, the mite induces the formation of specialized structures known as galls.
