White-winged spittlebug

Taxonomy. The white-winged spittlebug (Neophilaenus albipennis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. This species is a recognized pest in agricultural ecosystems, particularly noted for its specialized association with various grass species, including cultivated cereals and forage grasses.

Host plants and damage. The pest primarily attacks wheat, barley, rye, and other graminaceous crops. Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap from the stems and leaves using piercing-sucking mouthparts. This feeding process results in yellowing, stunted growth, and leaf deformation. In cases of severe infestation, the photosynthetic capacity of the plant is significantly impaired, leading to yield reduction and lower grain quality.

Biology and lifecycle. Neophilaenus albipennis typically completes one generation per year. The overwintering stage is the egg, which is deposited on crop residues or weed remnants. In the spring, nymphs emerge and produce a characteristic protective froth or foam, often referred to as "spittle." This substance protects the nymphs from desiccation and predators as they undergo multiple molts before reaching the adult stage by mid-summer.

Economic impact. The impact on crops is most severe during the early development stages of the plant. Besides direct sap depletion, the spittlebug acts as a vector for various plant pathogens. The presence of the foam on plants is a diagnostic indicator that often alerts farmers to the necessity of scouting and potential intervention to prevent significant economic damage.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest involves several key strategies:

• Maintaining clean fields by eliminating host weeds and grasses.
• Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pest's lifecycle.
• Performing deep tillage to bury crop residues that harbor eggs.
• Applying systemic or contact insecticides when population densities exceed economic injury levels.
