Streaked froghopper

Systematic position: The streaked froghopper (Neophilaenus lineatus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. It is a common insect found across various ecosystems, particularly those rich in graminoid vegetation, where it plays the role of a specialized herbivore.

Crops affected: This pest primarily targets various species of the Poaceae family. It is of economic significance in the cultivation of cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats, as well as in forage production areas where wild grasses are prevalent.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Neophilaenus lineatus consists of an egg, five larval instars, and an adult stage. Eggs overwinter on host plants. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs begin feeding and produce a characteristic white froth, often called "cuckoo spit," which shields them from desiccation and predators. The nymphal stage lasts for several weeks, culminating in the emergence of adults in early summer.

Damage and harmfulness: Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap. This process leads to yellowing, twisting, and necrosis of the leaves. High population densities can severely stunt the plant's growth, reduce the number of productive stems, and lead to significant reductions in both grain yield and quality of pasture forage.

Protection measures: Managing the streaked froghopper requires a multidisciplinary approach focusing on prevention and targeted intervention:

• Maintaining field hygiene by controlling grassy weeds.
• Monitoring fields during the spring to identify early nymphal activity.
• Application of systemic insecticides if the population levels threaten the economic output of the crop.
• Mowing of field margins and fallow lands to disrupt the insect's habitat and development cycle.
