Neopinnaspis

Neopinnaspis is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Diaspididae, order Hemiptera. These specialized pests are recognized by the protective, waxy scale covering they secrete, which provides significant protection against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical treatments. The genus includes species that are recognized globally for their potential to damage horticultural and ornamental plantings.

The host range of Neopinnaspis includes various evergreen shrubs, woody ornamental trees, and subtropical fruit crops. Because these insects are sedentary as adults, their ability to colonize a host plant effectively depends on the initial dispersal of the crawler stage. Once established, they become a chronic issue for the infested plant if left untreated.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid beneath the female’s protective cover. Upon hatching, the mobile crawler stage emerges, seeking out suitable vascular tissues on stems or foliage to insert their stylets and begin feeding. After successfully settling, they shed their skins and begin to secrete the characteristic hard scale that defines their appearance for the remainder of their adult life.

The damage caused by Neopinnaspis is primarily due to their phloem-feeding habit. By extracting large volumes of plant sap, they deplete essential nutrients, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and canopy thinning. Over time, the feeding activity can cause dieback of smaller twigs and, in severe cases, the death of the entire plant or tree.

Management strategies for this pest require a multi-faceted approach:

• Rigorous nursery stock inspections to prevent the introduction of the pest into new areas.
• Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce the initial population density.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity window when nymphs are most vulnerable.
• Utilizing horticultural dormant oils to smother settled scales by coating their protective covers.
