Nicentrus

Nicentrus (Nicentrus testaceipes) is a species of weevil (Curculionidae) within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as an agricultural pest that affects specific host plants, primarily within the Amaranthaceae family, and can become a significant factor in yield reduction if population levels are left uncontrolled.

The insect’s life cycle follows the pattern of complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in the spring to feed on the tender parts of the host plant. Mating occurs shortly thereafter, and females deposit eggs into the plant tissue. The larval stage is spent entirely inside the stems or petioles, which provides the larvae with protection from environmental factors and surface-applied pesticides.

Damage caused by Nicentrus testaceipes is primarily internal. Larval feeding destroys the vascular tissues of the stem, which inhibits the transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant. Typical visible symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and, in severe cases, the lodging or collapse of the plant stem due to structural damage.

To identify the presence of this pest, agronomists should inspect the fields for small entry holes and wilted leaves. Because the larvae are hidden inside the plant, monitoring the adults during their active phase is critical for effective management. Field scouting during the early vegetative stage is the most reliable method for detecting early infestations.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep plowing to disturb overwintering sites, and removing wild host plants help reduce the pest pressure. In situations where infestation thresholds are exceeded, the use of systemic insecticides remains the primary chemical solution to reach the larvae hidden within the plant tissues.
