Nippoptilia

Nippoptilia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pterophoridae (plume moths). These insects are specialized pests that can cause significant economic losses in agricultural crops. Systematically, they belong to the order Lepidoptera, characterized by their unique wing structure, where the wings are often folded into a narrow tube when at rest, making them difficult to detect.

The primary food source for many species of this genus are plants of the family Vitaceae. In particular, Nippoptilia vitis is known as a dangerous pest of grapevines in East Asian countries. In addition to grapes, some representatives may infest other woody and herbaceous plants, feeding on their reproductive organs and young shoots.

The biology of Nippoptilia is closely tied to the phenology of the host plant. These insects typically overwinter as larvae or pupae in plant debris or bark crevices. In the spring, with the onset of sap flow, the overwintered generation becomes active. The life cycle includes the stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult, with several generations potentially developing per season depending on regional climatic conditions.

The damage caused by Nippoptilia involves larvae boring into buds, inflorescences, and ovaries. This results in the deformation of clusters, reduced yields, and general weakening of the plant. The pest impact manifests as partial crop loss before berry ripening and the creation of entry points for secondary infections, such as gray mold, through damaged tissues.

Control measures require an integrated approach combining agrotechnical and chemical methods. Key strategies include:

• Collecting and destroying fallen leaves and plant debris where pests overwinter.
• Performing deep tillage or soil cultivation in tree rows and inter-row spaces.
• Monitoring with pheromone traps to determine the timing of moth emergence.
