Spruce scale

Systematic position. The spruce scale (Nuculaspis abietis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized sap-sucking pest that specifically targets coniferous tree species, particularly those in the genus Picea.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this insect are various species of spruce. While it is most commonly found on Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Colorado spruce, it can occasionally infest other conifers in domestic landscapes or forestry nurseries if the environmental conditions are favorable for its development.

Biology and life cycle. The spruce scale completes one generation per year. It overwinters as second-instar nymphs protected by a hard, waxy cover (scale) on the needles. In early summer, adult females lay eggs beneath their protective covers. Upon hatching, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the foliage to find a suitable location to settle, feed, and develop their own protective scales.

Damage and economic impact. The injury is caused by the nymphs and females extracting sap from the needles. The initial symptoms include discoloration of the foliage, which turns yellow or brown. As the infestation persists, needles drop prematurely, the tree's vigor declines, and branch dieback may occur, eventually threatening the overall health and ornamental value of the tree.

Control measures. Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Insecticides are most effective when applied during the crawler emergence phase in late spring or early summer. Horticultural oils or systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches or foliar sprays help to significantly reduce the population of these insects.
