Systematic position: Nuculaspis californica, commonly known as the black pine needle scale, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a highly specialized armored scale insect that primarily targets coniferous host plants, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage.
Host plants: This pest primarily infests members of the Pinaceae family. The most susceptible species include ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, Austrian pine, and various species of fir and spruce. Ornamental conifers in nurseries and urban landscapes are particularly vulnerable to infestations.
