Nysius cymoides

Nysius cymoides is a species of true bug belonging to the family Lygaeidae within the order Hemiptera. Commonly known in some regions as a type of false chinch bug, this insect is highly polyphagous and is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in Mediterranean and arid climates where outbreaks can cause severe economic losses.

The pest feeds on a diverse range of host plants, including cereal grains, legumes, sunflowers, cotton, and various vegetable crops such as tomatoes and brassicas. Young seedlings and newly emerging plants are at the highest risk, as the feeding pressure can lead to complete plant collapse or stunted growth during the critical early stages of development.

The biology of Nysius cymoides is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive potential. Adults typically overwinter in soil debris or protected areas. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs.
