Description
Systematic position: The New Zealand wheat bug (Nysius huttoni) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. It is a small, highly mobile insect known for its ability to rapidly invade agricultural landscapes, often becoming a significant economic pest in regions where cereal production is a core industry.
Crops affected: While it shows a preference for wheat and barley, Nysius huttoni is a generalist feeder. It has been documented causing damage to a variety of other crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, cruciferous vegetables, and numerous grass species, which often act as alternative hosts during the off-season.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect is well-adapted to surviving fluctuations in climate. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, typically within soil debris, dense plant cover, or under protected areas like rocks and field borders.
