Bamboo scale

Systematic position: Odonaspis litorosa belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. As a specialized scale insect, it typically inhabits areas where its specific host plants flourish, often demonstrating a preference for coastal or humid microclimates where it can thrive without extreme temperature fluctuations.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets members of the Poaceae family. Bamboo species are the most commonly reported hosts, making this insect a significant concern for both ornamental bamboo growers and those maintaining natural bamboo stands in affected regions.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, the mobile crawler (nymph) stage, and the sessile adult stage. Once a crawler settles on a suitable part of the host plant, it secretes a protective waxy scale that covers its body. The adult female remains stationary under this cover, while the crawlers are responsible for the colonization of new plants and spread of the infestation.

Type of damage and harmfulness: The insect causes damage by inserting its stylets into plant tissues to feed on sap. This constant drainage of nutrients leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and weakening of the plant structure. Severe infestations can cause the death of stems and render the plant highly susceptible to secondary diseases or environmental stress.

Control measures: Managing Odonaspis litorosa requires a strategic approach to prevent spread and minimize crop loss:
