Grass root scale

Systematic position: Odonaspis ruthae is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Diaspididae family. As a specialized phytophagous insect, this scale species primarily inhabits subterranean parts of plants. Its cryptic lifestyle makes it a challenging pest to identify in agricultural settings until significant population density is achieved.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets plants within the Poaceae family. It is commonly found on various species of perennial grasses, fodder crops, and ornamental grasses. Due to its preference for root systems, it can establish itself in permanent pastures, hayfields, and along roadsides, often going unnoticed for extended periods.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves sedentary females protected by a tough, waxy scale cover that adheres closely to roots or underground stem bases. Reproduction occurs beneath this protective shell. The dispersal phase is limited to the crawler stage (nymphs), which can be passively transported by wind, water runoff, or contaminated agricultural tools and equipment.

Nature of damage and pest importance: The scale insects feed by sucking sap directly from the plant's vascular tissue. This feeding behavior causes significant nutrient depletion, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and the eventual death of the affected parts. In severe infestations, the root system fails, leading to plant mortality and patches of barren soil in fields, which drastically reduces biomass production.
