Sugarcane scale

Systematic position. The sugarcane scale (Odonaspis saccharicaulis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized insect pest that primarily colonizes various members of the Poaceae family, remaining hidden beneath leaf sheaths or within the crevices of the plant stems.

Affected crops. The primary host plant for this species is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), though it may also infest wild reed species. The pest is adapted to tropical and subtropical environments where agricultural plantations provide a continuous food supply, leading to localized population outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Odonaspis saccharicaulis involves a sedentary female stage, during which it remains protected by a waxy test or scale. After the eggs hatch, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the plant surface to locate suitable feeding sites. Once a crawler settles, it inserts its stylet into the plant tissue and begins to feed, eventually forming its own scale.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding process involves the extraction of phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and water. Typical symptoms include chlorosis, stunting of the stalks, and overall weakening of the plant structure. Severe infestations negatively affect both the quality and quantity of the harvested product, causing significant losses for growers.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect. Key practices include:

• Strict quarantine and inspection of planting material.
• Effective field sanitation to remove infested debris after harvest.
• Monitoring crawler activity to time insecticide applications accurately.
• Encouraging natural predators such as parasitoid wasps that can regulate population levels.
