Systematic position: The plum lappet (Odonestis pruni) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is a well-known pest distributed throughout Europe and Asia, primarily impacting deciduous fruit-bearing trees.
Host plants: This insect shows a strong preference for members of the Rosaceae family. It predominantly damages plum, apple, pear, cherry, and peach trees. In the absence of orchards, it can survive on various forest trees like lime or poplar, which makes it a persistent threat in many regions.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as young larvae tucked into crevices in the bark or near branching points on trees. As spring temperatures rise, the caterpillars emerge to feed on developing buds and young foliage. After a growth period, they pupate in silk cocoons, and adult moths emerge during the summer months to lay eggs for the next generation.
