Description
Systematic position. The Poplar flea weevil (Odontopus calceatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is recognized as a significant foliar pest in forestry and urban landscaping, known for its leaf-mining habits during the larval stage.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this insect are various species of the genus Populus, particularly balsam and black poplars, as well as Tilia species (lindens). These trees suffer the most during the peak activity periods of the beetle in late spring and early summer.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered areas like bark crevices or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue, where larvae subsequently hatch and feed internally.
Damage and pest impact. Larval feeding creates characteristic mines within the leaf, which eventually turn brown and necrotic. This mining activity disrupts photosynthesis and can cause premature leaf drop if the infestation is severe. Adult feeding on the surface creates small holes, further contributing to the overall decline of tree vigor.
Protection measures. Management strategies include sanitation practices such as removing and destroying infested leaf litter to reduce the overwintering population. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the egg-laying period or when the first signs of larval mines appear to prevent further spread.
