Odontria (lat. Odontria) is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. Known commonly as New Zealand grass grubs, these insects are notorious for the damage they cause to pastures and forage crops. They are a significant focus of entomological research regarding pasture management and soil-dwelling pests.

The larvae of Odontria are the primary stage causing agricultural damage. They feed extensively on the roots of various grasses, cereals, and occasionally seedlings of horticultural crops. This subterranean feeding behavior often goes unnoticed until significant patches of pasture begin to wilt and die, leading to reduced yield and poor land quality.

The life cycle of the Odontria beetle generally spans one to two years depending on the specific environmental conditions and species. Adults emerge as beetles, often flying at dusk to feed on tree foliage and mate. Following mating, females return to the soil to lay eggs, starting a new generation of larvae that will dwell in the root zone.

Since the roots are eaten away, the grass loses its structural stability and its ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in rapid decline, especially during dry summer periods.

Techniques include regular monitoring of larval populations in the soil to determine if threshold levels are exceeded. Biological control methods, such as the application of Bacillus thuringiensis or entomopathogenic nematodes, have proven effective in reducing grub populations without relying solely on synthetic chemicals.

Furthermore, agronomic practices like promoting vigorous plant growth and managing soil moisture can increase the tolerance of pastures to grub attack.
